Cambodia’s garment exports increased significantly by %
According to the Central Bank of Cambodia (NBC), Cambodia’s garment and footwear exports exceeded US$10 billion in 2018, a significant increase of 24% from US$8 billion in 2017. In 2017, it only grew by 7.6%, mainly due to the performance of the global economy. Good, high demand drives export destinations, especially major export destinations such as the European Union, which accounts for 46% of Cambodia’s total garment exports, followed by the United States (24%), Canada (9%), and Japan (8%).
On the other hand, Ath Thorn, chairman of the Cambodian Labor Confederation (Cambodian Labour Confederation), questioned the high growth rate of 24% in an interview. He said that although Cambodia has benefited from duty-free treatment in markets such as the United States since 2016, clothing and shoes have , travel supplies and other exports have grown significantly, but he remains cautious about this value. The situation may not be so optimistic, because the alliance observes the amount of exports and the industry’s increase in labor demand, and 24% seems to be an overestimation.
