38. Why ban PFOS?
Answer PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonates) is the English code name for perfluorooctane sulfonyl compounds. It and PFCS (Per-fluorinated Compounds) have high bioaccumulation and various toxicity. They are persistent organic pollutants that are currently difficult to degrade. One of the chemical substances, perfluorinated compounds’ unique oil and water repellency make them widely used in fabrics, leather, coatings and other industries. The resulting pollution has gradually become one of the most toxic organic pollutants. PFOS is a new type of environmental persistent pollutant. Due to the large electronegative property of fluorine, the carbon-fluorine bond is highly polar and is one of the covalent bonds with large bond energy in nature. PFOS is extremely harmful to human health. It mainly inhibits enzyme activation, affects energy transmission, damages cell membranes, etc., thereby inducing cancer, liver enlargement and other diseases. It is estimated that the environmental half-life of PFOS is > 41 years, and it is highly bioaccumulative. As early as the 1960s, someone used NMR methods to detect PFOS in human serum, and speculated that PFOS contamination may be sexual. However, it was not until people solved the detection problems that plagued low-level PFOS that the research on PFOS became a Hotspot. Since 2001, various countries have carried out early warning assessments on PFOS and related chemicals. The United States put PFOS on the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) blacklist in 2001. In 2003, the British and Canadian Environment Departments announced the risks of PFOS. Early warning: On October 25, 2006, the European Union passed a resolution to restrict the use and sale of finished products and semi-finished products containing PFOS and related fluorine compounds. Substances containing PFOS as a constituent substance or element with a concentration or quality equal to or exceeding 0.005% shall not be sold. Sales of finished products or semi-finished products containing PFOs concentration or quality greater than or equal to 0.1%.
