In 2012, the fiber processing volume of my country’s textile industry was approximately 45 million tons, accounting for more than 50% of the fiber processing volume. There are about 20 million relevant employees; there are 37,000 enterprises above designated size; the total industrial output value is 5.78 trillion yuan, accounting for 6.4% of the country’s total; textile and clothing exports are 262.6 billion US dollars, accounting for 12.8% of the country’s total exports.

Although my country’s textile industry has made significant scientific and technological progress in recent years and has driven industrial innovation and development, in Yu Jianyong’s view, my country’s textile industry’s independent innovation capabilities are generally still relatively weak. Sustainable development of textile raw materials, innovative design and development of high-end and high-tech textiles, advanced textile processing technology, ecological dyeing and finishing technology, and the application of electronic, information, and automation technology to transform and upgrade the textile industry still need to be accelerated.

At present, the development of my country’s textile industry has entered a critical stage of transformation from “big” to “big and strong”. However, many companies report that government departments do not pay enough attention to technological innovation in the textile industry, ranking the textile industry on the edge of technological innovation, and believe that “there is no technological innovation in traditional industries.”

Yu Jianyong disagrees with this. “The scope of strategic emerging industries should include new fiber materials, emerging industrial textiles, ecological dyeing and finishing, advanced textile equipment, textile industry informatization, etc.” He suggested increasing investment in technological innovation in emerging textiles to promote the transformation and upgrading of the textile industry.

At present, the scientific and technological innovation support system related to my country’s textile industry is still very incomplete. According to statistics from the Shandong Textile Industry Association, enterprise technology centers at or above the provincial level in this industry only account for 2% of the total number of enterprises above designated size in the industry, and most of the existing enterprise technology centers have not yet assumed the role of enterprise technological innovation and secondary development. “The biggest shortcoming in the textile industry is the insufficient layout of key laboratories and engineering centers responsible for basic research on the application of common key technologies in the industry and the industrial development of results.” Yu Jianyong said bluntly. From fiber manufacturing, textile processing, dyeing and finishing to textile end products, the textile industry involves a long industrial chain. At the same time, each link in the industrial chain involves multiple technologies and disciplines such as processing technology, chemistry, physics, machinery, information, environment, and life sciences.
