Abstract: In 2016, Xinjiang continued to increase investment in the cotton spinning industry. It is expected that the investment by the end of the year will be close to 65 billion yuan, and the cotton spinning production capacity will reach 15 million spindles. At present, Xinjiang’s cotton spinning industry has formed two major textile cities in the north and south of Aksu and Shihezi, including Urumqi-Changji, Shihezi-Kuitun, Korla-Uli, Aksu-Alar and Kashgar Among the five major textile industry gathering areas, Xinjiang’s cotton spinning production capacity has reached 12 million spindles by the end of 2015. In 2017, Xinjiang plans to expand its cotton spinning production capacity to 18-20 million spindles.
With the continuous development of the cotton spinning industry, the amount of cotton used in Xinjiang has attracted widespread attention. If the cotton consumption per 10,000 spindles is calculated at 80-100 tons, the cotton consumption for Xinjiang’s 15 million spindles will reach 1.2-1.5 million tons. According to statistics from relevant agencies, Xinjiang’s cotton shipments reached about 3 million tons in 2015. According to the National Cotton Market Monitoring System survey, Xinjiang’s cotton output in 2016 will reach 3.782 million tons, which means that Xinjiang’s cotton shipments this year will drop to 2.2-2.6 million tons. Against the backdrop of a sharp decline in cotton production in the mainland, Xinjiang cotton will become a valuable resource that textile companies within and outside Xinjiang will compete for in the future.
