Evaluation standards for flame retardant properties of fabrics

Flame retardant fabrics, textiles, functional fabrics, oxygen index

Evaluating the flammability of fabrics is mainly considered from two aspects: one is the ease of ignition (that is, the level of ignition point), which indicates The ease with which fabrics catch fire; the other aspect is the burning properties of fabrics (i.e. flame retardancy).

There are two criteria for evaluating the burning performance of fabrics:

One is Judgment is based on the burning rate of the fabric: that is, the fabric that has been flame-retardant is contacted with the flame for a certain period of time according to the prescribed method, and then the flame is removed, and the time for the fabric to continue burning with flames and the time for burning without flames is measured, and the time for the fabric to be burned is measured. The extent of the damage. The shorter the flaming burning time and the flameless burning time, and the lower the degree of damage, the better the flame retardant performance of the fabric; on the contrary, it means the fabric has poor flame retardant performance.

The other is to judge by the oxygen index (also called extreme oxygen index) method: fabrics need oxygen to burn, and the oxygen index (LOI) is the fiber The expression of oxygen required for combustion, so the flame retardant performance of the fabric can be determined by measuring the oxygen index. The higher the oxygen index, the higher the oxygen concentration required to maintain combustion, which means the more difficult it is to burn. This index can be expressed by the smaller volume percentage of oxygen required when the sample maintains candle-like combustion in a mixed gas of nitrogen and oxygen: LOI = oxygen concentration/(oxygen concentration + nitrogen concentration) × 100%, the oxygen index is lower than 20%, It is a flammable fiber; when the oxygen index is between 20 and 26%, it is a flammable fiber; when the oxygen index is between 26 and 34%, it is a flame-retardant fiber; when the oxygen index is above 35%, it is a non-flammable fiber.
